NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS TRENDS
& INSPIRATION FOR 2023

NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS ARE THE LATEST TREND

The last few years have changed the way people think about a lot of things. And that shift has included health moving more towards to the forefront of people’s minds. Many have become much more conscious of what they eat and drink. New trends have seen things like “vitamin seaweed” growing in popularity. In drinks, this awareness of health has caused a boom in non-alcoholic drinks and ways to treat yourself – with searches for “fancy non-alcoholic cocktails” increasing by 220%.

This development was described by Mark Meek, CEO of IWSR, as “a moderation trend that’s sweeping across key global markets, and that’s bringing with it increased demand for reduced alcohol or alcohol-free drinks”. In fact, over 50% of Global Consumers find non-alcoholic cocktails appealing, as a healthier & refreshing option. We can also see that this trend is accelerating, with a 16% increase of consumers now more likely to choose non-alcoholic cocktails versus 2019.

What’s more, in the UK, 21% of consumers in 2022 do not drink alcohol at all, with a further 32% actively reducing the amount they drink.

WHY CHOOSE ALCOHOL FREE?

Part of the reason for this explosion in popularity, is that there’s so many reasons to have a non-alcoholic drink. Gone are the days when they were solely for the designated driver.

THE LIGHTER ALTERNATIVE

As we’ve mentioned already, health is a wonderful reason to have less alcohol. And not just the immediate calorie reduction from cutting it out but having the energy and focus the following day to make healthier food choices and perhaps partake in some exercise.

GREAT TASTING DRINKS

While alcohol brings a lot of calories, it often doesn’t contribute as much as you might imagine to the taste of a drink – especially in a cocktail. So, if you’re looking for a delicious, showstopping drink that’s also lighter in calories, non-alcoholic cocktails are a wonderful place to start.

TRYING NEW RECIPES & COCKTAILS

Learning that 73% of people look at the cocktail menu “every/almost every time” they order, shows exactly how keen everyone is to try new things. Again, this trend is increasing in recent years, as 50% of consumers are now experimenting with more adventurous cocktail choices, post lockdown. With bars offering more and more non-alcoholic cocktails in recent times, even without previous forethought, curiosity will surely entice people to join this recent trend.

NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS FOR EVERY OCCASION

One of the nicest things about the recent growth of the “low and no alcohol” trend, is its inclusivity. Whether it’s for health, religion or even previous issues with alcohol, people don’t always wish to discuss their choices. By offering an alternative, we have the opportunity to make great tasting and exciting beverages for everyone. And with the constant growth of this trend, it may be that alcoholic drinks become the less popular choice in the future.

From low alcohol beers to alcohol-free spirits, there are many options for people wishing to reduce their alcohol intake – or remove it altogether – the next logical step in this alcohol-free journey is expanding the offering of non-alcoholic cocktails – especially for bright and bold summer events or cosy winter evenings.

We have long been a promoter of this style of drink and recently revealed our collection of non-alcoholic cocktails, inspired by Gemstones. These, along with our previous non-alcoholic cocktail and mocktail collections, prove that cocktails don’t need alcohol to look and taste incredible. Many of the elements that make a delicious serve are sodas, tonics, fruit juices, syrups, herbs and spices. The realisation that a drink can be built on the flavours of these elements alone, opens up a whole wealth of opportunity and avenues of creation.

Whether you’re putting together a drink’s menu for a summer party, a birthday extravaganza, a religious holiday or even a sumptuous date night, our flavour experts at London Essence have created a plethora of options for you when it comes to alcohol-free drinks.

We’re delighted that this trend gives more people the chance to enjoy the opulent world of cocktails – while also allowing more established cocktail drinkers the chance to change their lifestyle without feeling as though they’re missing out on something they love. Here’s to the future of beverage exploration both with and without alcohol.
